What is a Hanging Indent?

For those who don’t know, Hanging Indentation is a text formatting style. It keeps the indentation of the first line default but indents and pushes the rest of the text further. Generally used for citation formats like MLA or Chicago style

The people actively involved in writing knows that this feature is more used and useful in Google Docs but, that doesn’t mean you cannot and you do not need to do hanging indent on Google Slides. Using a Ruler to do Hanging Indent

Note: You would be able to use this method only when your Ruler is enabled and visible to you.

Start by opening the desired Google Slide or create a new one.
Make your Ruler Visible by Clicking on the View option and then Selecting Show Ruler from the Dialogue box

In the Ruler area, Look for the Ident Control.  It’s an upside-down triangle with a rectangle on the top. This is the tool that will help you do Hanging indent on your text.

Note: First Line Indent can be shifted freely but Left Indent always shifts along with First Line Indent

1. Select the text you want to apply Hanging Indentation on. After that Drag the downwards arrow till you reach the desired indentation of your text.

Note: If you don’t select a Paragraph to Indent, the first paragraph will be indented by default.

2. Now Drag the First Line Indent back to where you wish your first line to start from.

You have created the Hanging Indent on your Paragraph!

Hanging Indent in Google Slides Using Your Keyboard

This option has a big advantage in that, unlike the previous method, you can separately indent specific lines of your paragraph unlike having to do hanging indent on the whole paragraph post the first line.

1. Bring your Cursor to the beginning of the line you want to Indent.

2. Press Shift + Enter (Shift + Return for Mac users). Skipping the step and moving further might Indent the whole paragraph.

3. Press Tab and your desired line shall be indented.

You can press Tab multiple times to further indent your text as per your requirement.

4. Repeat the Process to all the lines and you will create the Hanging Indent on your Google Slides.

This procedure is said to be a little tedious due to the repetitive nature of the process. Furthermore, there is a lack of freedom of Indent that you can have in this option as it offers only discrete extents of indentation to your lines. However, this method has its own niche utilities and can be a helpful tool is preparing your Google Slides.

Hanging Indent got its name from the formatting we achieve after executing this process. The leading, first line remains in the normal indentation and the rest of the paragraph is indented furthermore than the first line. This way, the first line appears to hang over the paragraph and was thus named, Hanging Indentation.

Though used more frequently in Google Docx, Microsoft Word, and a similar program, Hanging Indent still finds its unique utility in Google Slides and is easy to execute with the methods provided above.
